Ben 10 has one of the cleanest hooks in cartoon history: a kid finds a watch and becomes aliens. The mechanics behind it are more interesting than the pitch suggests.

Where Ben 10 came from
Ben 10 was created by the writing collective Man of Action — Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly and Steven T. Seagle — and premiered on Cartoon Network in 2005. It ran through multiple sequel series and remains one of the network's most successful original properties.

What the Omnitrix actually is
In-universe the Omnitrix is a device containing stored DNA samples from alien species across the galaxy, built so the wearer can take an alien form at will. It is a catalogue, not a magic wand — which is why the show can keep adding forms without breaking its own rules.
Its limits are the source of most of the plots: a timer that forces Ben back to human form, random selection when he is in a hurry, and a lock preventing him from choosing freely early on.
Why the design is smart
The Omnitrix gives a ten-year-old a rotating power set with a built-in fail state. Every episode has a ticking clock, and the show never has to explain why Ben does not just solve everything instantly.
It is also merchandising-perfect, which is a large part of why the franchise has run for two decades.
