'Can Wolverine's claws cut Captain America's shield?' is the most durable argument in comics fandom, and almost nobody arguing it knows what either metal is supposed to do. They are not two grades of the same thing. They work on opposite principles.
Here is what each material actually is in the comics, where the rules have been broken, and what the shield is really made of.
Vibranium absorbs — that is the whole gimmick
Vibranium is a Wakandan meteoric metal whose defining property is absorbing vibration and kinetic energy. It does not resist force by being harder than the force; it eats the force. A bullet fired at vibranium does not ricochet with equal energy, it stops.
Because absorbed energy has to go somewhere, later stories gave vibranium a redistribution property: it can store and release what it takes. That is the mechanic behind the Black Panther suit's kinetic discharge in both comics and film.
There is a second variant. Antarctic vibranium, sometimes called anti-metal, does the opposite — it emits a vibration that liquefies other metals. It is a plot device more than a material, but it is canon and it explains a handful of otherwise baffling stories.

Adamantium resists — and that is a different problem
Adamantium is a man-made alloy, created accidentally in an attempt to replicate Captain America's shield. Its property is simple and absolute: once cast and cooled it is effectively indestructible, and it cannot be reshaped.
That immutability is the interesting constraint. Adamantium items cannot be repaired, resized or reforged, so every adamantium object in Marvel is a one-off. It also means the molten state is the only vulnerable window, which several stories have exploited.
Wolverine's skeleton is adamantium bonded to bone, and the lore has always been clear that the bonding process is the horror, not the metal. Secondary adamantium, a weaker variant, exists mainly to let writers destroy things when the plot requires it.

The shield is neither, exactly
Captain America's shield is usually described as a vibranium–steel alloy produced by an accident that has never been successfully reproduced. That irreproducibility is deliberate: it makes the shield unique in a universe where anything manufacturable gets mass-produced by a villain within eighteen months.
Functionally it behaves like vibranium — it absorbs impact almost totally, which is why a thrown shield does not shatter the arm holding it and why Cap can block hits from beings far stronger than him.
The MCU simplified this to 'vibranium'. The comics version's hybrid nature is more useful for explaining its behaviour, and it is the reason the classic answer to the claws question exists at all.

So can the claws cut the shield?
The honest answer: it has been shown both ways, and the version most often treated as authoritative is no. The shield's alloy is a special case, and the standard ruling is that adamantium claws cannot cut it.
The most cited counter-example comes from a Marvel event in which the shield is damaged, and from the film Avengers: Endgame, where Thanos shatters it with a weapon of unspecified composition. Neither is a claws-versus-shield result.
The reason the argument never dies is that both materials are defined as superlatives — 'indestructible' and 'absorbs anything' — and superlatives cannot both hold in the same panel. Writers pick whichever serves the story, and fans pick whichever serves their favourite.
Where the rules break
Adamantium has been destroyed by Thor, by molecular manipulation, by the Hulk in high-anger states, and by anything the plot deems above material physics entirely. Vibranium has been shattered when writers needed the fall of Wakanda to mean something.
The useful reading frame is tiering. Both metals are effectively absolute against street-level and most superhuman force, and both are provisional against cosmic-tier force. That is not a contradiction so much as a genre convention.
If you want the cleanest mental model: vibranium is a solution to energy, adamantium is a solution to matter. Attack them with the wrong thing and either looks invincible.
Other metals worth knowing
Uru is Asgardian, the metal of Mjolnir and Stormbreaker, and its defining property is holding enchantments rather than being hard. Carbonadium is a radioactive adamantium substitute, more malleable and toxic, and the reason Omega Red exists.
Nth metal is DC's equivalent conceptual object — Thanagarian, anti-gravitational, and responsible for Hawkman's flight and a great deal of DC's messiest continuity.
Between them, these four cover almost every 'what is it made of' question in mainstream comics.
